Health Canada Warns of Salmonella in Pastries After Over 60 Fall Ill

Over 60 Canadians Sickened in Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Tainted Pastries

A nationwide outbreak of food poisoning has left over 60 Canadians ill after consuming Sweet Cream brand mini pastries, which have been linked to Salmonella infections.

Health Canada issued a public health notice on Sunday, confirming the outbreak across Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, and Ontario. The pastries, distributed in various settings including hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, retirement homes, and hospitals, have caused widespread sickness and sent 17 people to hospital. Symptoms of salmonella include gastrointestinal distress, including vomiting and diarrhea, fever, chills, and sudden onset headaches.

Health Canada is advising anyone who may have purchased the affected pastries to check for product details, including the specific brand, size, UPC, and codes, to determine if they are part of the recall. Consumers are urged to dispose of any Sweet Cream mini pastries that match the recall information.

As the investigation continues, Canada is considering sending inspectors to Italy, where the pastries were manufactured, to help determine the source of the contamination.
