Fire Forces Evacuation of Thickwood Apartment Complex

Fort McMurray, AB –A fire in an apartment unit forced the evacuation of a 43-unit building in Thickwood late Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to 421 Ross Haven Drive after a report of a fire in one of the building’s units. Crews arrived at the complex shortly before 11 a.m., quickly extinguishing the flames, containing the fire to a single suite. All residents were evacuated during the response. The RMWB brought in Transit buses to bring evacuees to a temporary warming shelter set up at the Salvation Army near Centrefire Place. Emergency Social Services also assisted evacuees.

No injuries were reported, and most residents are expected to return to their homes once the building is deemed safe. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
