FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is beginning its residential snow-clearing program on Tuesday, Oct. 15, as part of its annual Winter Maintenance Zone (WMZ) program.

With warm weather continuing, the RMWB is relaxing all WMZs until further notice, meaning no on-street residential parking restrictions are in effect.

The program runs from October 15 to April 15, where residential roads are cleared on a bi-weekly basis when subzones are active. Windrows—snowbanks taller than 15 cm—will be cleared from driveways in these active subzones. When a subzone is active, residents are required to move their vehicles off the street on their designated day of maintenance. Signs are posted on every street informing people of the subzone, and the day and time for its seasonal snow clearing.

The RWMB is encouraging residents to stay informed by signing up for WMZ alerts through the municipality’s website. Information will also be posted on orange electronic signage at neighbourhood entrances, as well as through the RMWB’s social media accounts.

On main roads and feeders not included in the WMZ program, temporary no-parking signs will be posted ahead of snow removal. Vehicles must be moved within 24 hours to avoid potential ticketing and towing. Crews will have 72 hours to complete snow clearing in those areas.
