Wood Buffalo RCMP Continue Investigation into Police Impersonator
Fort McMurray, Alberta – Wood Buffalo RCMP are continuing to investigate an alleged police impersonator. Authorities have released a composite sketch of the suspect, who allegedly introduced himself as “Officer Tom” during a traffic stop.
On September 15, at around 7:30 p.m., a driver of a black Suburban activated blue and red lights to pull over another vehicle. A man dressed in black, without visible police identifiers or a duty belt, exited the Suburban and claimed to be a police officer.
The impersonator demanded that the driver exit their vehicle for a random search. When the driver refused, the suspect insisted on performing a “breathalyzer” test. The driver again declined to exit the vehicle. The unknown male then presented a roadside screening device, like those used by the RCMP, and instructed the driver to blow into it. The driver complied, but the suspect left the traffic stop before reading the result. The impersonator was last seen driving away from Fort McMurray on Draper Road.
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect or any others who may have encountered him. Anyone with information is asked to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP at (780) 788‐4040. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1‐800‐222‐8477 or via the “P3 Tips” app.
RCMP remind the public that they can request an officer’s badge and ID card, both of which should have matching numbers. Concerned residents can also call the RCMP to verify an officer’s identity.
