Wood Buffalo RCMP nabs motorcyclist with ‘Need for Speed’

A speedster on a motorcycle that tore through the downtown, Thickwood, and Timberlea neighbourhoods has been arrested.

Wood Buffalo RCMP were conducting standard patrol on Highway 63 near Franklin Avenue just after midnight on Tuesday morning when they noticed the motorcyclist travelling at high speed, approaching 150 km/hr toward downtown.

The motorcycle was lost momentarily before being spotted again heading north on Franklin Avenue, travelling 190 km/hr, according to police radar.

The police monitored the motorcyclist for over an hour, driving at high speeds and performing stunting behaviour, allegedly attempting to bait police. Repeated attempts were made to stop the motorcyclist, but they were unsuccessful due to safety concerns. RCMP then utilized a drone to locate the suspect riding to a residence on Duncan Drive, where officers made the arrest and seized the motorcycle.

32-year-old Christopher Kelly is facing several charges, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and driving an uninsured motor vehicle. Kelly will appear in court later this month.
