Keyano to create Indigenous Student’s Centre

Keyano College is building a new Indigenous Student Centre downtown.

The new space will be located in what is currently the Syncrude Technology Centre on the Northeast side of their Clearwater Campus. Once completed, students can attend ceremonies in the centre, meet with the Elder-in-residence, take part in communal cooking, and view Indigenous art and artifacts.

The College says the initiative is rooted in the spirit of “Keyano,” meaning “sharing” in Cree, and reflects the college’s commitment to community and reconciliation. The Bouchier Family Charitable Trust has donated $250,000 to help fund the project.

“As we look back on the past 25 years of Bouchier, we are humbled by the journey and the support we have received from our community,” said Nicole Bourque-Bouchier of the Bouchier Family Trust.

“We believe in paying it forward, and this legacy donation to support the Indigenous Student Centre at Keyano is just the beginning. We are excited about the future and remain committed to promoting opportunities for Indigenous peoples and community development.”

A second phase of the project, including an outdoor gathering space, is also being planned.
