Fire bans lifted south of Lake Athabasca

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has lifted the fire ban for the urban service area. Alberta Wildfire is also lifting its fire ban for the Fort McMurray Forest Area, but only for areas south of Lake Athabasca.

Due to a very high fire danger forecast, the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan and areas north of Lake Athabasca are still under a fire ban. Under this ban, all outdoor wood fires are prohibited, including wood campfires on public lands, wood campfires on private land, and provincial campgrounds. Backyard firepits, barbeques using charcoal briquettes, fireworks, and exploding targets are also outlawed.

Alberta Wildfire has lifted the restrictions on the use of Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) for areas south of Lake Athabasca. Forecasters for the province say recent precipitation and cooler weather across most of the province have decreased the wildfire danger. The northern-most sections of Alberta are the exception with fire danger forecast to increase.
