Region Loses 900 Jobs Month Over Month, Unemployment Sees Big Drop

The region is seeing another drop in jobs month-over-month.

According to Statistics Canada’s latest labour force survey, Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake lost around 900 jobs in October. This after the area lost around 1,200 positions in September.

The forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, oil and gas sector saw the biggest drop, losing around 800 jobs. Around 23,400 people in the region work in this sector.

Construction had the second biggest drop as they lost around 500 jobs in October.

The Health care and social assistance sector had the biggest increase for the second straight month, adding approximately 500 spots.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate dropped from 6.2 per cent to 5.1 per cent.

Provincially and federally, the unemployment rate saw decreases from last month – sitting at 6.8 per cent and 5.5 per cent respectively.
