The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is announcing the next documentary in the series “It’s Time to Read”.
The film is called, “nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up”, and is directed by Tasha Hubbard. It is the story of Colten Boushie, who was shot dead in Saskatchewan in 2016, and his family’s pursuit of justice following the killer’s acquittal.
Released in 2019, the motion picture has received 14 awards including Best Canadian Documentary at the 2019 DOXA Film Festival, the Critics Circle Award as well as Best Canadian Documentary at the 2020 Vancouver Film Festival, and has even scored a rare 100 per cent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Important, urgent, remarkable… Every Canadian should see it,” wrote Jesse Wente, Head of Toronto International Film Festivals Cinematheque.
“This heartbreaking tale hits a nerve that won’t be unstruck anytime soon,” wrote Ken Eisner of The Georgia Straight.
The film screens at the Keyano Recital Theatre on September 20th at 7:00 p.m. Doors will open 15 minutes before showtime.
After the screening there will be a discussion with residential school survivor and advocate for Murdered, Missing and Exploited Indigenous Peoples, Stephanie Harpe.
