Bones of Crows to Debut in Fort McMurray and Conklin

A new film is headed to our region as part of the National Indigenous Community Screening tour.

The feature-length movie, “Bones of Crows” is written and directed by Métis-Dene filmmaker Marie Clements.

The film premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival to a warm reception. Scoring an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, Bones of Crows is told through the eyes of Cree Matriarch Aline Spears as she survives a childhood in Canada’s residential school system to continue her family’s generational fight in the face of systemic starvation, racism, and sexual abuse.

Spears uses her uncanny ability to understand and translate codes into working for a special division of the Canadian Air Force as a Cree code talker in World War II. The story unfolds over 100 years with a cumulative force that propels us into the future.

“Bones of Crows has a very single thought on its mind and attacks racism and prejudices with an equal measure of anger and sadness,” writes Christopher Cross of Tilt Magazine.

The film makes its debut in our region, free of charge, on February 28th at 7:00 PM at the Conklin Multiplex, and concludes on March 1st at 7:00 PM at Keyano Theatre.
