Mikisew Cree First Nation Zero Tolerance Drug Policy

Mikisew Cree First Nation Chief and Council are taking a strong stance against illegal drug activity on their reserve.

In a letter posted to the band’s website, the Chief is informing members of the First Nation that there will be a zero-tolerance policy towards illicit drugs.

The band has given the RCMP authority to conduct searches on reserve lands and Mikisew-owned properties where they suspect drug activity.

The band has also passed a By-law permitting the eviction of individuals who are reasonably suspected of engaging in drug crime.

The letter says that Fort Chipewyan is becoming one of Alberta’s crime hotbeds.

MCFN also acknowledges the harmful effects that drugs have on their Nation and Community, adding that drugs perpetuate the intergenerational trauma they face.
