Extreme cold warning issued for Fort McMurray area

Environment Canada is issuing extreme cold warnings for all of Alberta and much of BC and Saskatchewan today as a mass of arctic air settles over the north.

Record temperatures are being set in several regions.

According to Environment Canada, overnight temperatures in Fort McMurray will linger into the minus 30s, with the wind chill values in the minus 40s.

A warming trend is expected by the weekend.

For people traveling for the holidays, the Alberta 511 is reporting poor driving conditions on Highway 63 from Mariana Lakes through to Grassland.

Adding to travel woes, the Vancouver and Calgary airports are reporting several delays in air travel due to the weather, causing some backups and flight delays at feeder and connecting airports.
