The Municipality of Wood Buffalo has partnered up with Bike Index, a non-profit online bicycle registry, to help residents retrieve their missing bikes.

Bike Index attempts to deter bike theft and helps to increase the chances of individuals getting their stolen property back.

It works by registering your name, bike manufacturer, serial number, and component information which the RCMP will have full access.

If you’re looking at buying a used bike, make sure to check Bike Index to ensure the property hasn’t been reported missing.

“We continually look for tools to support our community to combat theft,” said Nicole Chouinard, Manager RCMP Support Services. “Some of our neighbouring communities have partnered with Bike Index and have seen a direct connection with this program and the increase of bike returns. We believe if the community adapts this tool, we can cut down on bike theft in our region.”

Wood Buffalo RCMP Community Policing and Bylaw Services will be holding a Bike Rodeo event this Saturday, Aug. 13 at their Timberlea detachment at 105 Paquette Drive to help people get their bikes registered, proper helmet fitting, and take part in an obstacle course.
