Dog owners in Fort McMurray are having their say on whether to add a new dog park to the north side of the city.

In the 2019 Parks Master Plan, it was recommended that the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) gather public feedback for an off-leash facility.

Engagement in a new dog park has begun through online surveys and public engagement sessions giving residents three viable park locations to take their pets.

• Eagle Ridge- 5.5 acres in size costing roughly $524,640.
• Heritage Point at Parsons Creek- 3.5 acres in size costing roughly $338,040.
• Heritage Point Storm Pond 1- 4.2 acres in size costing roughly $329,400.

Greg Bennett, Strategist with the RMWB commented that the three locations chosen were the only Municipality-owned locations that are considered feasible.

Each park is expected to have two double-gate entries, park furniture, and fencing at a minimum.

Bennett stated that a new dog park is being explored based on community needs, with residents in the north desiring a closer park being a key consideration.

More detailed designs and construction timelines for a new park will be based on public feedback and budget considerations according to Bennett.
