Westwood Students Appointed To Education Minister’s Youth Council

Alberta’s Minister of Youth Council is going to feature a couple of Fort McMurray Public School District students.

Neel Patel and Shaaf Babar, both from Westwood, are two of 40 students across Alberta to be appointed to the council after more than 350 people applied.

The MYC features students with diverse interests and backgrounds who will provide feedback on a number of educational topics.

“I am honoured to be selected for the MYC and for the opportunity to represent my school and community at the provincial level,” said Babar.

“I am excited to meet and collaborate with fellow students from across the province on a variety of topics and challenges in education and hope to give a voice to important issues that require attention including tackling racism and discrimination through stronger educational programs and initiatives.”

Patel is also looking to bring change to matters that affect youth.

“I look forward to sharing my experiences with Alberta Education, and I hope that by bringing my perspective to the table I’ll be able to help bring change to the curriculum for the betterment of all Albertan youth.”

Council members will attend three in-person meetings this year depending on the COVID situation.
