You’re being reminded to be extra careful when enjoying the outdoors this week.

The region, along with the rest of western Canada, is experiencing a heat wave that’s seeing temperatures well above 30.

Environment Canada is also forecasting Fort McMurray to hit a high of 41 on Wednesday which would make it the hottest day in the community’s history.

Because of this, Alberta Wildfire is asking residents to be mindful when outside as wildfires can start very easily.

The warm weather has forced the province to issue a fire restriction for the Fort McMurray Forest area.

This means wood campfires on public land are prohibited along with fireworks and exploding targets.

Existing fire permits have are been suspended.

Residents are still allowed to use their backyard fire pit.

“Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished,” read a report from Alberta Wildfire.

Off-highway-vehicles can still be used, however, drivers are reminded to check for hot spots and remove debris before and after every use.

OHV’s and campfires continue to be main causes for wildfires in the region.

Since March 1, there have been 25 wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest area which have burned over 264 hectares.

As of Tuesday, five fires were still active, though each was either under control or being held.

If you are found responsible for causing a wildfire, you can be charged with the cost of fighting it.
