Select properties in Thickwood are getting the chance to receive new smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
For the past eight years, Regional Emergency Services has educated residents of potential fire risks and hazards within their homes through the Home Fire Safety Program.
Different neighbourhoods are also given the chance to get new alarms, with older areas getting top priority, with the program available for those living on Woodland, Castle Ridge, Duncan, and Cornerbrook.
“The fact is that smoke alarms save lives,” said Tanya Balducci, RES Senior Inspector.
Two families were saved back in April after their alarms alerted them of separate housefires.
Since 2012, the program has provided 1,428 home inspections, installed 1,836 smoke alarms and 691 carbon monoxide alarms, all free of charge.
Due to COVID-19, RES crews will not being doing in-person inspections.
Instead, property owners in the four neighbourhoods are encouraged to fill out an online safety checklist.
“We’ve worked to make the checklist as quick and easy as possible,” added Balducci.
“After filling it out, eligible residents will receive all the replacement alarms they need.”
The alarms should be delivered in around two weeks.
More information, including what residents should know about each alarm, can be found on the RMWB’s website.
