McGrath Not Seeking Re-Election For FMCSD Board Of Trustees, Self-Funding 10-Year Scholarship As Parting Gift

The Fort McMurray Catholic School Board of Trustees will have at least one new face after this year’s municipal election.

After serving for 17 years, over five terms, Keith McGrath has decided to step away. He has still not made a decision on whether he plans to run again for Wood Buffalo council.

McGrath tells Mix News he’s seen a lot get accomplished over the years, believing now is the time for others to step in.

“It’s time to pass it on to a couple of great ladies I know in the community that are going to run and carry on that service work.”

Despite stepping away, McGrath is still planning to help a few students continue their education.

Starting in 2022, he’s launching a 10-year scholarship in honour of his family and the late Geraldine Carbery.

McGrath says he gained a lot of respect for the long-time trustee after working alongside her for several years.

“She was the kind of lady who was all about the kids, but if any needed a kick in the arse they got one.”

The scholarship is still being finalized, however, the plan is to offer funds for one student every year for the next 10.

McGrath says he’s funding it all himself, using money he saved up working for Suncor at a young age.

He adds the focus is on helping those who would otherwise have a tough time continuing their education.

“Let the administrators decide what kid deserves it… a kid that struggles at home, a kid that everyone talked about not making it.”

The plan is to offer the scholarship to any student in the RMWB, regardless if they’re in the FMCSD, Public School Division, or the Northland School Division.
