AHS, Province File Court Injunction To Continue Taking Local EMS 911 Calls

Alberta Health Services and the province are filing an injunction to prevent the RMWB from refusing to transfer EMS 911 calls to AHS’s provincial centres.

Wood Buffalo council met on Tuesday where they approved a motion from Mayor Don Scott to have the local emergency communications centre once again handle all medical emergencies.

According to regional emergency services, they’ve had to intervene in roughly 20 per cent of calls since AHS took over in mid-January.

In a release, AHS says the joint application has been filed with the Court of Queen’s Bench.

“This is not a step we take lightly, however it is necessary to ensure ambulances continue to be dispatched appropriately, and that patient care is not put at risk.”

They note this decision could cause delays in patient care.

This is the same argument the RMWB has made about AHS’s system.

According to regional emergency services, they’ve had to intervene in roughly 20 per cent of calls since AHS took over in mid-January.

“I can’t see what they’re thinking with down there, obviously they’re not using any parts of their brains because it just makes common sense,” said Councillor Phil Meagher, when speaking about the province changing systems.

The municipality met with Health Minister Tyler Shandro on Thursday morning.

They once again asked him to reverse his decision, however, the RMWB says this request was rejected.
