Fort McMurray is seeing a sizable jump in active COVID-19 cases.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, announced on Tuesday 843 new cases across the province.

This raises the provincial total to 106,378 with 13,411 currently active. There are also 919 Albertans in the hospital for the virus, 140 of which are in ICUs.

Locally, Fort McMurray added 37 new cases and 17 additional recoveries which raises the active total to 268.

The rural areas and Wood Buffalo National Park didn’t see any new changes which keep the total of active cases at seven and two respectively.

In total, 1,294 individuals across the RMWB – 1,173 in Fort McMurray, 116 in the rural areas, and five in Wood Buffalo National Park – have recovered.

They are among the 91,799 who’ve recovered across the province. This represents over 86 per cent of reported cases.

There were also 26 new deaths from COVID-19 in Alberta over the past 24 hours – raising the total to 1,168.

To date, three individuals in Fort McMurray have died as a result of the virus.

Meanwhile, a second healthcare worker in Alberta has died from COVID-19.

Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health, also announced on Tuesday a continuing care worker in her fifties passed away in the Edmonton zone.
