Municipality Launches Community Cleanup and Adopt-A-Trail Programs for Earth Day
Fort McMurray, AB— The snow may have melted, but it’s left behind a winter’s worth of debris across parks, trails, and public spaces in the region. To help tackle the mess, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is inviting individuals, families, and organizations to participate in its annual Community Cleanup and Adopt-A-Trail programs.
Launched on Earth Day, these initiatives encourage residents to take pride in their communities by volunteering to clean up litter and beautify outdoor spaces. Whether you’re looking to give back for an afternoon or make a seasonal commitment, the programs offer flexible opportunities to get involved.
Participants in the Community Cleanup program can register for one session or multiple outings throughout the season. Volunteers can clean neighbourhoods, playgrounds, parks, or trails and will be provided with bags and other supplies while quantities last. Once the cleanup is complete, teams can report their bags for municipal pickup and are encouraged to submit a group photo.
For those interested in a longer-term commitment, the Adopt-A-Trail program allows groups or individuals to select an available section of trail or green space, ranging from half a kilometre to three kilometres in length. Volunteers are asked to complete four cleanup sessions between May and September. Those who return for a second consecutive year will be recognized with signage in their adopted area as a thank-you.
Registration for both programs is open until September 15. Cleanup supplies must be returned by September 30. Volunteers can sign up online at rmwb.ca/cleanup, by calling Pulse, or by visiting their local municipal rural office.
The RMWB is working with partners, including FuseSocial and Acden Environment to kick off the cleanup season with a special event on May 1 at kiyām Community Park. Taking place from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., the event coincides with National Volunteer Week and will include a chance to win a wagon full of goodies. Acden Environment will also be onsite with a garbage truck to haul collected bags to the landfill.
