ALERT seizes $800,000 worth of meth in interprovincial drug bust
EDMONTON — A massive shipment of methamphetamine bound for Edmonton has been intercepted following an investigation involving police in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
On April 9, officers with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) stopped a vehicle near Wainwright, Alberta, approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. During the stop, police searched the vehicle and uncovered nearly 200 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in secret compartments. The drugs have an estimated street value of over $800,000.
Police say the driver was arrested and taken into custody. Following the arrest, police searched two homes in Edmonton connected to the investigation. Inside, they discovered more drugs, along with firearms and cash. The seizures included over 20 kilograms of methamphetamine, more than three kilograms of cocaine, a cocaine buffing agent, fentanyl, a prohibited handgun fitted with a silencer, a loaded shotgun, counterfeit currency, and more than $31,000 in cash. Police also seized the courier vehicle used to transport the drugs.
Two suspects remain in custody, though charges have not yet been laid. Investigators say Crown prosecutors are sorting through the details, and charges are expected soon.
The firearms recovered have been submitted for forensic analysis and ballistics testing, while the cash and vehicle will be considered for civil forfeiture.
Inspector Angela Kemp with ALERT’s organized crime team in Edmonton said the case highlights how organized criminal networks operate across provincial borders. She thanked police in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and Edmonton for their help in preventing the drugs from reaching the community.
ALERT is urging anyone with information about drug or gang activity to contact their local police service or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
