Fire advisory issued for southern RMWB as wildfire near Janvier reaches 150 hectares
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — Alberta Wildfire has issued a fire advisory for parts of the southern Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) as dry and windy conditions continue across the Lac La Biche Forest Area.
The advisory affects the communities of Janvier (also known as, Chard, and Conklin. While all existing fire permits remain valid, renewals will only be granted at the discretion of a provincial forest officer. The advisory does not ban safe wood campfires but the province urges residents to exercise caution with all burning activities.
The advisory comes as a wildfire burning roughly 10 kilometres north of Janvier has grown to nearly 150 hectares since it began on Monday. Alberta Wildfire says the blaze is now being held thanks to the efforts of firefighting crews.
Another smaller wildfire started up just outside Janvier on Tuesday afternoon. Crews responded quickly and are working to contain it.
Officials stress that this is not a fire ban, but a precautionary measure due to the heightened risk of fire spread in the current conditions
