Alberta Tops Canada in Beverage Container Recycling
Albertans returned more than two billion beverage containers in 2024, earning the province the top spot in Canada and second in North America for recycling. The return rate reached 85 per cent in 2024 which stands well above the national average of 76 per cent. surpassing other provinces like Saskatchewan (84 per cent), B.C. (83), Ontario (75), and Quebec (68).
Only the U.S. state of Oregon posts a higher return rate, though Alberta recycles a wider variety of containers, including juice boxes, boxed wine bags, milk cartons and drink pouches.
“Albertans are winners and these results prove it,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas. “My call to Albertans is simple: when you are finished with your cans and bottles, recycle. Put money back in your pocket. And keep helping your fellow Albertans beat the competition.”
The success is credited to Alberta’s industry-led system, with over 219 bottle depots playing a frontline role. “This achievement reflects the commitment of Albertans to recycling and the ongoing innovation that drives our system forward,” said Ken White, board chair of the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation.
With continuous improvement from regulators and depot operators, Alberta’s system is becoming a model for the continent. “This success is a direct result of our shared commitment to continuous improvement and innovation,” said Loren Falkenberg, board chair of the Beverage Container Management Board.
