Trump’s Softwood Tariffs Could Lead to Toilet Paper Shortages, Industry Warns
Proposed U.S. tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber could have an unexpected impact on household essentials, including toilet paper.
The Quebec Forest Industry Council, warns that higher tariffs will drive up the cost of northern bleached softwood kraft pulp, a key ingredient in toilet paper and paper towels. Canada supplies the U.S. with more than two million tonnes of this pulp annually, and supply disruptions could lead to price hikes or even shortages.
The industry fears a repeat of pandemic-era panic buying, as consumers rush to stock up before prices rise further. The Trump administration intends to nearly double tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber to 27%, with potential extra levies pushing the rate beyond 50%.
