Fort McMurray to Host 2025 Alberta VEX Robotics Championships
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — The top middle and high school robotics teams from across Alberta will converge in Fort McMurray this weekend for the 2025 Alberta Provincial VEX Robotics Championships. The event, a qualifier for the prestigious VEX Robotics World Championships in Texas, will take place on Saturday at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre at Keyano College. Local teams from Father Mercredi, Westwood, Holy Trinity, and École McTavish high schools will compete against teams from Calgary, Edmonton, and Sherwood Park.
Fort McMurray Catholic and Public school divisions are co-hosting the event, with support from Syncrude, operated by Suncor. Organizers say the competition will highlight the skill and innovation of Alberta’s young roboticists. “What an opportunity for us to highlight our local talent, and community, to all of Alberta!” said Natasha MacArthur-Poole, superintendent of Fort McMurray Catholic Schools. “With spots at the World Championships in Texas on the line, we have no doubt this will be an incredible experience for the competitors.”
Fort McMurray teams have a strong track record in competitive robotics, with multiple squads qualifying for past World Championships. “We are thrilled to co-host the VEX Robotics Provincials this year, welcoming teams from across Alberta to showcase their teamwork, coding, and problem-solving skills,” said Annalee Nutter, superintendent of Fort McMurray Public School Division. “These competitions highlight the creativity, collaboration, and innovation of our students as they refine skills that will serve them well into the future.”
The competition will give local teams the chance to qualify for Worlds for the fourth straight year. “We are incredibly excited for the opportunity to compete here at home and show our community the best of the best in VEX Robotics in Alberta,” said Holly Kalma, event lead and Father Mercredi High School coach. “With spots to the World Championships on the line, we expect to see incredible competition.” The public is invited to attend the event and witness the skills of Alberta’s rising robotics talent.
