Fatal Fire in Chipewyan Prairie First Nation Under Investigation

One person is dead following a residential fire in Chipewyan Prairie First Nation early Saturday morning.

Regional Emergency Services and Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a residential fire shortly after 5 a.m. on January 25. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, but the building sustained extensive damage. During their assessment, responders found one person inside the residence who had succumbed to the fire.

Wood Buffalo RCMP, with assistance from their Forensic Investigation and General Investigation Sections, are working with municipal fire investigators to determine the cause of the fire.

Authorities remain on the scene and are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP detachment.

An earlier version of this story erroneously stated the fire occurred in Fort Chipewyan, rather than Chipewyan Prairie First Nation. Harvard Media News apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.
