Fort McMurray Dog Owner Fined $7,000 After Attack, Municipality Urges Pet Owner Responsibility
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — A dog owner in Fort McMurray has been fined $7,000 following a rare dog attack last summer. The incident took place in August 2024, and it led Bylaw Services to lay ten charges against the pet owner for violating multiple sections of the bylaw.
While details of the attack remain limited, the dog owner pled guilty to six of the charges during a December court appearance. The remaining four charges were withdrawn, and the dog was euthanized prior to sentencing.
“Thankfully, the individual involved was not seriously injured, but this incident has highlighted the importance of proper care and control of potentially dangerous animals,” said Bylaw Services Manager Aaron Anderson. “The requirements under the bylaw are designed to protect residents and other animals in the community.”
Following the attack, additional conditions were imposed on the dog owner to safeguard the public. Municipal officials are urging all pet owners to ensure their dogs are licensed, kept on a leash in public spaces (except in designated dog parks), and managed responsibly.
