Shootout on the Snye Returns to Fort McMurray for WinterPlay Festival

Fort McMurray’s largest annual pond hockey tournament, the Shootout on the Snye, is set to make its return during the WinterPlay festival from February 21 to 23. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is inviting hockey enthusiasts of all ages to lace up their skates and join the fun.

Registration for the tournament is now open, with early bird rates of $30 per player available until January 22. The sign-up fee increases to $40 after, with final registration closing on February 3.

Participants under 18 years old must register individually and will be placed in balanced teams to ensure fair play. Players aged 18 and older can sign up as individuals or as part of a team in the Open Division. All registered players will receive a commemorative Shootout on the Snye jersey.

The tournament will begin with a ceremonial puck drop at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 21, and all teams are guaranteed at least three games. Matches will be played four-on-four, with a maximum of six players per team. The event is strictly non-contact hockey. Playoffs are scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 23, concluding at 5 p.m.

The RMWB is also seeking referees to help ensure the tournament’s success. Referees will be paid $25 for each 35-minute game, and additional fundraising opportunities for community groups and organizations will be announced on January 20.

For more details on registration or to sign up as a player, team, or referee, visit the RMWB website.
