SADDLE LAKE FIRST NATION, Alta. — A 61-year-old man has died, and another is facing a first-degree murder charge following a stabbing on the Saddle Lake First Nation, located about 270 kilometres south of Fort McMurray.

On January 8, RCMP from St. Paul were called to a residence on the First Nation after reports of a stabbing. Officers arrived to find Garvin Lloyd Chisan suffering from serious stab wounds. He was airlifted to an Edmonton hospital by STARS air ambulance but later died of his injuries.

Alberta’s RCMP Major Crimes Unit was deployed to take over the investigation. On January 10, officers arrested 44-year-old Saddle Lake resident Jeremy Shaun Cardinal and charged him with first-degree murder in connection with Chisan’s death.

Cardinal remains in custody and is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Lac La Biche today.
