Large Load Wil Cause Delays Between Edmonton and Fort McMurray
Travellers between Edmonton and Fort McMurray should expect delays this week as a massive load makes its way up the highway. A Coker is departing from Draco Industrial on Tuesday morning, heading to Suncor. On Tuesday it will make its way through the capital city before stopping overnight at the Two Hills weigh-scale.
By Wednesday the unit is expected to travel on Highway 28 and then onto Highway 63.
The load, which stands nearly 9 meters tall, 10 meters wide, and almost 50 meters long, weighs nearly half a million kilograms. The Coker will be transported on a flatbed trailer with 192 wheels and is limited to a maximum speed of 60 km/h. Pilot and guide vehicles will assist with the move, and at times, the rig will travel against the flow of traffic, blocking off lanes as necessary.
Travelers can expect significant delays as the load takes up the full width of the highway, including the shoulders.
The unit is expected to reach Suncor in the early morning hours of January 10th. Drivers are urged to plan for extra travel time as the transport progresses along its route.
