Athabasca Chop-Shop Bust Uncovers Millions in Stolen Goods from Fort McMurray Area

RCMP Trace Stolen Goods to Fort McMurray Theft Victims

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Alberta RCMP are working to return millions of dollars worth of stolen property recovered from an alleged chop-shop near Athabasca. Police have linked most items to thefts in the Fort McMurray area.

Corporal Troy Savinkoff, RCMP Public Information Officer, said the thefts primarily occurred over the past 18 months and included items stolen from industrial parks, residential neighbourhoods, and rural areas. Victims are being contacted as police continue tracing the origins of the recovered property.

“There’s no need to contact the detachment,” Savinkoff said. “As long as a police report was filed when the property went missing, we’ll be able to trace it and get in touch with you.”

The investigation has led to charges against 36-year-old Fort McMurray resident Kyle Cushing, who is accused of operating the alleged chop-shop.

Savinkoff urged anyone who may have purchased vehicle parts, trailers, or other items from Cushing to contact police. “Possession of stolen property is a criminal offence, even if you didn’t know it was stolen,” he said. “We can usually trace parts and confirm whether they belong to a victim of theft.”

The RCMP continues to sort through the recovered property and is asking the public to remain patient as they work to return items to their rightful owners.
