Trudeau Turmoil Triggers Talk of Transition

Atlantic Liberal MPs Call for Trudeau’s Resignation in Holiday Letter

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing mounting pressure from within his party after the Liberal Party’s Atlantic caucus called for his resignation.

New Brunswick MP Wayne Long, who represents Saint John-Rothesay, posted the letter online on Sunday. The document, which was dated December 23, praised Trudeau’s leadership and legacy but expressed concern over the party’s chances of winning the next federal election under his leadership. It also voiced fears of a potential victory by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

The Atlantic MPs have requested a national caucus meeting in January to discuss a leadership transition and the possibility of appointing an interim leader.

The call comes as the Liberal government braces for non-confidence motions from both the Conservatives and the NDP when Parliament resumes at the end of January. With a minority government, and the Bloc, NDP, and Conservatives all speaking out against the Liberals, the non-confidence motions are likely to succeed, triggering an early election.

Trudeau has yet to respond to the letter, but the growing internal dissent underscores the challenges he faces in maintaining party unity and public confidence heading into 2025.
