NDP Hold Lethbridge-West Following Official Results by Elections Alberta

NDP Officially Retains Lethbridge-West in By-Election Win

Elections Alberta has released the official results of the Lethbridge-West provincial by-election, confirming 7,230 votes and a win for NDP candidate Rob Miyashiro. UCP candidate John Middleton-Hope came in second with 6,093 votes.

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Shannon Phillips, a former cabinet minister and nine-year veteran of the Alberta Legislature. Phillips took the riding for the NDP in 2015 defeating then PC incumbent Greg Weadick.

The result leaves the makeup of the Alberta Legislature unchanged. However, it marks the first election win for the NDP under the leadership of Naheed Nenshi, who succeeded Rachel Notley earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the Alberta Party finished a distant third, capturing just 1.7 per cent of the vote, raising questions about its relevance in Alberta’s increasingly polarized political landscape.
