Over 100 Impaired Drivers Nabbed During RCMP Safety Blitz
RCMP were kept busy during a recent traffic safety blitz, which saw nearly 1933 motorists ticketed for everything from speeding to distracted driving.
The seven-day campaign took place from December 1st to 7th as part of National Safe Driving Week. During the blitz, police officers across the province issued 642 speeding tickets, including one for a driver who was clocked going 80 km/h over the posted speed limit.
While RCMP continually reminds motorists to never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs, nearly 159 drivers were taken off the road for driving while impaired. Officers removed 54 of them from provincial roadways on December 7th alone.
Sergeant Darin Turnbull of the Alberta RCMP Traffic Unit stressed the importance of road safety, particularly during the holiday season. “December is a time for celebration,” said Sgt. Darin Turnbull. “Many Albertans will be travelling across the province to see their friend and families. No matter what your holiday plans are, always be mindful of traffic safety. Saving a few minutes is not worth the risk.”
