Fort Chipewyan Winter Road Delayed Due to Damage

Winter Road to Fort Chipewyan Delayed Due to Warm Weather and Damage

Fort McMurray, AB – The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has announced a delay in the opening of the winter road to Fort Chipewyan. The RMWB typically opens the road on December 15th, but warmer-than-normal November temperatures and damage caused by motorists attempting to use the road prematurely have caused problems.

The RMWB is asking motorists to stay off the road until it is officially opened. Travelling before the route is ready not only delays the opening but also poses significant safety risks to both construction crews and drivers.

Crews with the RMWB are working feverishly to open the road before Christmas, but the exact date of opening remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, the La Loche Winter Trail is also currently closed as crews work to prepare it for safe travel.
