Suspect in Custody Following Early Morning Shooting in Thickwood

Fort McMurray, AB — Early Tuesday morning, Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a high-priority 9-1-1 call reporting suspicious persons, possibly armed, in the 100 block of Spruce Street in the Thickwood neighborhood.

At approximately 5:00 a.m., officers arrived on the scene and entered a local apartment building, where they were met with gunfire coming from inside.

As RCMP members moved closer to the apartment believed to be the source of the shots, additional rounds were discharged. Police quickly secured the area to ensure public safety. Shortly after, a male suspect attempted to evade capture by jumping from an exterior balcony. He was promptly arrested by officers without further incident.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the area as a result of the gunfire.

The suspect, a 23-year-old Fort McMurray resident, is currently in police custody, with charges pending.

The investigation is ongoing with support from the Wood Buffalo RCMP Forensic Identification Services, Police Dog Services, and General Investigation Section. RCMP have assured residents that there is no further threat to public safety.
