FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta — The tragic death of Emily Verge, a Fort McMurray woman killed while working at a downtown restaurant on Saturday, is drawing attention from across Canada. From Newfoundland to Victoria, Canadians are sharing condolences as Emily’s friends, family, and the community grieve.
On Saturday, a Ford F-350 crashed into the downtown restaurant, killing Verge and causing significant structural damage to the building. New information has come to light indicating that the driver, 28-year-old Roger Sierra of Calgary, was allegedly under a medical driving suspension at the time of the incident. The information comes from court documents obtained and verified by the Canadian Press. Sierra has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and is scheduled to appear in court on December 4.
According to the Government of Alberta, a medical suspension can be issued if a driver “has a physical or medical condition that adversely affects [their] ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.”
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign launched Monday to help her family has already raised more than $65,000, with donations pouring in from across Canada, including contributions from individuals and corporations.
Two local companies have also organized fundraisers to support Verge’s family. The Fort McMurray Golfers Association is holding a raffle featuring 37 prizes, and Prestige Jewelers is raffling a 2.5-carat diamond ring. As of Wednesday, the ring raffle has already raised over $10,000. All proceeds from both draws will be donated to the Verge family.
The community’s response to the passing of Emily Verge reflects the love and respect she inspired among family, friends, and colleagues.
