Fort McMurray Resident Fined Over $1,200 for OHV Violations in Restricted Area
FORT MCMURRAY, AB – A Fort McMurray resident faces hefty fines after being caught driving an Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) on public lands. On October 27, Bylaw officers responded to a complaint of an OHV being driven in Municipal Greenspace in Abasand behind Atkinson Lane. Both Bylaw and RCMP responded to the complaint, resulting in the operator of the OHV being ticketed for Carelessly driving an OHV on property accessible to the public, operating an OHV on Municipal property, and operating an OHV without a helmet.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is reminding residents that OHV use within the Fort McMurray Urban Service Area is prohibited. Limited OHV use within the Abasand subdivision is permitted as part of the Abasand OHV Pilot Project. Through the project, OHV use in Abasand is restricted to designated municipal roads when travelling to and from approved staging areas or the Abasand gas station. Riding on trails, parks, or other public spaces is prohibited. Snowmobiles are not included in the current OHV pilot project and must be transported to staging areas before use on crown lands.
The RMWB has set up a website to detail rules and regulations regarding OHV use in our region.
