Mayor Sandy Bowman Receives First Poppy as Annual Campaign Begins

FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta—The Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign is underway. The local drive kicked off on Friday at Fort McMurray’s Legion Branch 165 in Waterways, where Legion President Michael Gray pinned the first poppy for Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo on Mayor Sandy Bowman.

At the traditional pinning, Mayor Bowman spoke of his appreciation for everything our veterans have done, as well as those who continue to serve our country and community. “It’s important to honour Canada’s veterans and all those that sacrificed, including those living right here in our region,” said Mayor Bowman. “By contributing to the annual Poppy Campaign, you support our Legion and the local membership.”

Since 1921, the Poppy has stood as a national symbol of Remembrance. The Poppy is also the recognized symbol for the Legion’s Poppy Campaign, which raises funds to support Veterans and their dependents.
