Alberta RCMP Urge Caution After Snow Snarls Highways

FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta — After heavy snow caused delays and disruptions on highways across Alberta, the RCMP are urging motorists to use extra caution and be prepared for winter driving season. Yesterday’s weather caused snarls and headaches on Highway 63 while Highway 2 between Calgary and Edmonton saw numerous vehicles sliding into ditches and gridlock as tow trucks worked to clear the chaos.

Although warmer temperatures are expected to improve road conditions over the next few days, the RCMP are issuing drivers of some winter driving tips. Police say it is important to clear all snow from your vehicle before hitting the road, allow extra travel time, and drive according to road conditions. They also advise increasing the following distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you, as stopping distance is reduced in the cold, particularly when roads are icy.

RCMP also suggests that motorists carry an emergency kit in their vehicles. Suggested items include a thermal blanket, extra clothing, a flashlight with spare batteries, booster cables, a first aid kit, and a shovel along with sand or kitty litter for traction if vehicles become stuck.
