Alberta Launches $7 Million Campaign to Fight Federal Emissions Cap

Alberta is stepping up its fight against the federal government’s proposed emissions cap for the oil and gas sector with a new $7 million advertising and social media campaign.

Dubbed “Scrap the Cap,” the campaign aims to raise awareness about the potential economic impacts of the federal government’s new oil and gas regulations on everyday Canadians. The province argues that the emissions cap, formally called the “Regulatory Framework for an Oil and Gas Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions Cap”will lead to higher prices for groceries, gasoline, and other essential goods. The assertion is supported by the Conference Board of Canada, Deloitte and S&P Global.

The province also believes the incoming emissions cap will have a devastating effect on provincial GDP, shrinking it by 4.5 per cent. The Canadian GDP would also drop by over 1 per cent, resulting in 150,000 Canadians losing their jobs and the loss of $14 billion a year from the economy

The Scrap the Cap campaign is on top of Alberta’s continuing legal challenge against the regulatory framework, arguing that the emissions cap is unconstitutional and infringes on provincial jurisdiction.
