Provincial Grant Expands Keyano College’s Social Work Program
FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta— A provincial grant is enabling Keyano College to expand its Social Work Diploma Program by adding 30 new seats. The funding is part of the Alberta government’s $10 million, three-year initiative aimed at increasing the number of mental health professionals trained in post-secondary institutions across the province.
Alexis Teske, associate dean of human services at Keyano, said the expansion will help address the growing demand for social workers.
“This grant is a significant step forward in equipping our students with the skills and knowledge to make a meaningful impact in their communities,” Teske said.
The two-year program trains students to work with diverse populations, including individuals, families, and communities. It includes two practicums that provide hands-on experience in real-world settings.
Interim Vice President of Academics and Student Experience Arlene Starkes said the grant will benefit both students and the broader Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region.
“By expanding our capacity and improving our facilities, we’re preparing graduates to meet the demands of today and to shape the future of social work in Alberta,” Starkes said.
The college says the new spaces will ensure graduates are well-prepared to address the complex challenges faced by individuals, families, and communities.
