Residents in Fort Chipewyan will soon have access to a new creative hub in their community. The Mikisew Cree First Nation Education Authority, Wood Buffalo Regional Innovation Network, and Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development & Tourism are launching a makerspace at the Fort Chipewyan Secondary School. The facility will offer residents access to computers, 3D printers, and regular programs to learn how to use the equipment.

“Fort Chipewyan is an innovative community, and I see that firsthand in how we approach our education programs. This new makerspace will unlock more opportunities for all members of our community,” said Kerri Ceretzke-Mercredi, director of education at the Mikisew Cree First Nation Education Authority.

“We know that people across Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo have great ideas, and these makerspaces are here to help make them a reality,” said Jennifer Warren, program manager at the Wood Buffalo Regional Innovation Network.

The project has been in development since November 2023, following the Momentum Event on October 26, where the idea was initially conceived, according to Melonie Doucette, director of entrepreneurship and innovation at Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development & Tourism.

The Fort Chipewyan Makerspace will officially open at noon on Sept. 18 at the secondary school. Community members are invited to attend for equipment demonstrations, refreshments, and brief presentations.
