Fort McMurray man charged with multiple counts of identity fraud related to cell-phones.

FORT McMURRAY, Alberta —A 22-year-old Fort McMurray man is facing a multitude of charges relating to Identity theft.

In a media release, Wood Buffalo RCMP say between February and April of this year, a person working at The Mobile Shop located inside of The Real Canadian Superstore in downtown Fort McMurray allegedly accessed existing clients’ personal information and used the data to open fraudulent mobile device accounts. The suspect then used the fraudulent accounts to order mobile devices which police say he kept.

The suspect was able to execute the scam without any of the victim’s consent or knowledge. Police say together victims lost over $60,000.

Daksh Jain is facing 59 counts of Identity Fraud and 2 counts of Fraud over $5,000. Jain was held for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing and released from Police Custody on a Release Order. He is set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice – Fort McMurray next on Aug. 28, 2024
