Two Dead in Separate Boating Accidents Over Long Weekend in Alberta

Two Albertans have died in separate boating accidents over the long weekend.

On Saturday, a young boy drowned on Slave Lake while kayaking with his father. RCMP were alerted after the pair did not reach their planned arrival time and destination. Police searched the lake using boats, drones, and helicopters.

The overturned kayak was located around 9 p.m., with the father found nearby. The young boy, whose age was not released, was later found deceased. Both were wearing life jackets, but neither could swim.

On Sunday, a 32-year-old Edmonton man died following a jet-ski accident on Moose Lake near Bonnyville. Police were called to the popular lake shortly after noon on August 4, following reports of a possible drowning. Two men were riding a Sea-Doo when it overturned. One of the men, who was not wearing a life jacket, drowned after sinking beneath the water.

Alberta RCMP are urging Albertans to remain vigilant when recreating on the water.

“Whether you are swimming, boating, or enjoying yourself in close proximity to water, it is important to understand the potential hazards and take extra precautions,” the RCMP said in a media release.

The RCMP recommends reviewing water safety tips from the Canadian Red Cross.
