Environment Canada tracking severe thunderstorms near Fort McMurray

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Fort McMurray, July 29, 2:00 p.m.

FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Fort McMurray as of Monday at 1:49 p.m., according to Environment Canada.

Meteorologists are monitoring a cluster of severe thunderstorms approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Fort McMurray. These storms are capable of producing very strong wind gusts, nickel-sized hail, and heavy rain.

The heavy downpours may lead to flash flooding and create hazardous road conditions. The storms are also associated with strong winds that could toss loose objects, damage weak structures, break tree branches, and overturn large vehicles.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when storms are imminent or occurring and are likely to produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, or torrential rainfall.
