Fourteen high school students in Tokyo, Japan were recently hospitalized with stomachaches, nausea, and mouth pain after sharing a bag of potato chips infused with Bhut Jolokia peppers. The thirteen girls and one boy were among 33 students who had shared the ultra-spicy chips, made with Bhut Jolokia, once listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “world’s hottest pepper.” The students were treated for their mild symptoms in the emergency room and released later that day. According to Jiji Press, some students even collapsed in the school infirmary due to the pain. This incident is being highlighted as a cautionary tale for young students considering trying such spicy snacks.
