Evacuation Alert issued for Janvier and Chipewyan Prairie First Nation

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is placing the community of Janvier on an evacuation alert. The Chipewyan Prairie First Nation is also issuing an evacuation alert.

There are two growing out-of-control wildfires near the communities which are prompting the alerts. In the last report, the largest fire is 214 hectares and approximately 15 kilometers northwest of Janvier.

The RMWB says Janvier residents should be ready to leave on short notice.

Residents are advised to:

  • Follow rmwb.ca/alerts for evacuation information
  • Be aware and stay informed by following official and trusted channels such as alberta.ca/wildfire-status
  • Download the Alberta Emergency Alerts App
  • Follow local media sources
  • Arrange with neighbours to advise one another of an emergency notification
  • Prepare an emergency kit for your household
  • Make an emergency plan for your household

The Municipality says that this is an alert only and not an evacuation order. Alberta Wildfire is leading the fire suppression efforts, and they plan to use night-vision equipped helicopters to help beat back the flames overnight.
