The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has officially opened the FireSmart Interpretive Trail.
The pathway showcases FireSmart practices in construction and landscaping, including interpretive signs, demonstration panels, and displays. It also provides information on the ecology of the boreal forest and includes an observation deck with views of the Birchwood Trails. The trail also contains fun elements for children.
“It’s crucial for us to understand how to live and play in the boreal forest while being mindful of the wildfire risks,” said Regional Fire Chief Jody Butz. “This trail is a valuable educational resource that demonstrates how we can achieve that.”
The FireSmart Interpretive Trail is located between Cornwall Drive and the Beaver Trail nestled inside the Birchwood Trails system. The project was made possible through funding from the Canadian Red Cross and Government of Alberta.
